According to Myanmar’s official media cited by CCTV News on October 20, the Myanmar military has launched a sweeping crackdown on cross-border cyber fraud operations. In a recent raid on the infamous KK Park in Kayin State, authorities seized 30 sets of Starlink satellite receivers and accessories made by SpaceX.
Since early September, the military has been conducting continuous operations along the Myanmar–Thailand border. This latest raid involved searches of more than 100 buildings and uncovered 2,198 individuals linked to online scams and illegal gambling.
Reports indicate that even after Thailand cut off internet and power connections to the border area, scam syndicates quickly turned to Starlink satellite internet to stay online—rendering the blackout largely ineffective.
Satellite imagery and drone footage revealed rooftops in KK Park crowded with Starlink antennas—around 80 on a single building—serving as a new digital lifeline for the fraud networks.
Data from the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) shows that within just three months (July–September), Starlink has become one of Myanmar’s leading internet providers, holding 12.37% market share, second only to the state-owned Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications.
Experts warn that the black-market trade in Starlink equipment could be worth billions of US dollars. Myanmar’s military vows to keep up its offensive against cyber fraud rings and to dismantle the satellite-powered networks enabling them.
