(New Delhi, Feb 2) — The spiritual leader of the Tibetan government-in-exile, Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, said on Monday that he felt grateful after winning his first GRAMMY Awards, taking home one of the music industry’s top honors in the audiobook, narration, and storytelling category.
According to AFP, the award was announced at the ceremony held in Los Angeles, California. The Dalai Lama won for Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
In a social media post, he wrote that he accepted the honor “with gratitude and humility,” adding that he did not view it as a personal achievement but rather as recognition of a shared universal responsibility.
He also said he firmly believes that peace, compassion, care for the environment, and an understanding of the oneness of humanity are essential to the well-being of the world’s eight billion people.
AFP noted that the project involved multiple artists, including Rufus Wainwright, who accepted the award on his behalf, and singer Maggie Rogers.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate has said he expects to live a long life, though the Tibetan exile community has been preparing for the future after his passing.
The report also referenced historical practices around the selection of Dalai Lamas, including signs, searches, and recognition processes, as well as political struggles that sometimes surrounded them. During the Qing dynasty under the Qianlong Emperor, the “Golden Urn” lottery procedure was introduced, with final approval granted by the central authority; the current 14th Dalai Lama was also recognized by the Nationalist Government of the Republic of China.
Now 90, the Dalai Lama has lived in exile in India since leaving Tibet in 1959.
