During the match, Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni directed racist remarks toward him. Both the player and the Portuguese club have firmly denied the accusation.
In response, UEFA issued a provisional decision, suspending Prestianni for one match pending a full investigation by its Ethics and Disciplinary Committee. Should the allegations be substantiated, the 20-year-old Argentine winger could face a suspension of at least 10 matches.
The provisional suspension has sparked debate. Former Argentine referee Javier Castrilli voiced strong criticism of UEFA’s handling of the matter. He argued that imposing a suspension without publicly presented evidence sets a troubling precedent, warning that it could encourage unverified accusations in the future.
Castrilli further claimed UEFA made “two serious mistakes”: first, delivering a suspension before the investigation concluded; and second, failing to fully consider the broader context of on-field interactions. He suggested the incident may have stemmed from escalating tensions during the match.
