On this first day of the second round, Sabalenka, Rybakina, Yastremska, Tauson, Cristian, and Ostapenko all advanced. Top seed Sabalenka, No. 4 seed Paolini, defending champion and No. 5 seed Swiatek, and No. 8 seed Zheng Qinwen all remain in the hunt.
Here’s a summary of the five unexpected highlights:
① Sabalenka was down 1-3 early but quickly found her rhythm, winning nine straight games to defeat Teichmann 6-3, 6-1 in a commanding performance.
② Olympic silver medalist and 18th seed Vekic battled hard in three sets but crumbled in the decisive tiebreak, losing to Pera and bowing out.
③ Zheng Qinwen’s match also had its ups and downs. After wasting five break points in the opening game and getting broken, she quickly regrouped to win four straight games and took the first set 6-2. Despite 4 double faults and 30 unforced errors, she moved on.
④ Schneider, the No. 11 seed in Zheng’s section, blew a 4-0 lead to lose to Yastremska 0-2 and exit early. As one of Zheng’s biggest obstacles to the quarterfinals, her early departure clears the path for Zheng.
⑤ In the most anticipated match, defending champion Swiatek crushed Raducanu 6-1, 6-2, extending her French Open winning streak to 23 matches and her head-to-head against Raducanu to 5-0.
