On October 23, the NBA regular season tipped off in thrilling fashion as the Philadelphia 76ers edged the Boston Celtics 117–116 on the road, grabbing a dramatic opening-night victory.

But the spotlight didn’t belong to Joel Embiid this time — it was the young backcourt duo of Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey who stole the show, combining for an explosive 74 points to lead the Sixers to triumph.

Rookie Edgecombe, the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft, was sensational. In 42 minutes, he shot 13-of-26 to post 34 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists — becoming the first NBA rookie of the 21st century to score 30+ points in a season opener.

Meanwhile, Maxey was his usual electric self, tallying 40 points, 2 rebounds, and 6 assists on 13-of-24 shooting. His poise and control in crunch time sealed the victory for Philadelphia.

Edgecombe not only displayed elite scoring instincts but also impressive court vision and composure for a first-year player. It’s increasingly clear that the Sixers’ front office may start building their future around the Edgecombe–Maxey duo as their new franchise cornerstones.

As for Joel Embiid, the reigning MVP had a rough outing. Coach Nick Nurse limited his minutes to just 20 to protect his health. Embiid finished with 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists, shooting a cold 1-for-9 from the field and 0-for-4 from three, with a game-low –16 plus-minus.

If a trade partner emerges for the oft-injured star, Philadelphia might just be ready to turn the page — because a new, youthful era has clearly begun in Philly.

Keep a little curiosity for the next story.
