The 2025 Chinese Super League season has come to an end, and after narrowly securing survival, Qingdao Hainiu entered a period of transition. Head coach Li Xiaopeng submitted his resignation following the season, and despite the club’s attempts to retain him, his departure was officially confirmed. Li later stated that he plans to take a short break and will not rush into a new role.
However, “rest” does not mean fading from the spotlight. According to Shandong-based media, Li has quickly become one of the hottest names on the coaching market. At least five CSL clubs have already expressed strong interest, and should he choose to return, remaining in the league next season appears highly likely.
Li took over Qingdao Hainiu at the start of the campaign under challenging circumstances. The team struggled throughout the first half of the season, hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone. Tensions ran high, with on-field performances drawing criticism and even fan protests, placing immense pressure on the veteran coach.
The situation worsened in the second half, particularly after a crucial away defeat to Meizhou Hakka, which pushed the team to the brink. Yet when it mattered most, Li delivered. Qingdao stunned Beijing Guoan 4–2 away from home, edged Wuhan Three Towns 1–0 at home, and drew 2–2 with Zhejiang in the final round. Seven points from the last three matches secured a 15th-place finish and confirmed survival.
Objectively speaking, this dramatic turnaround highlighted Li Xiaopeng’s ability to steady teams under pressure. His tactical adjustments, leadership in critical moments, and extensive connections within the league all played a role. In the CSL, experience often matters as much as strategy.
Despite survival, Qingdao Hainiu soon faced internal instability. All five foreign players were expected to depart, while reports revealed a funding gap of approximately 30 million yuan. Anticipating major operational challenges ahead, Li chose to step away—an exit widely regarded as timely and pragmatic.
Looking at his recent record, Li successfully guided Cangzhou Mighty Lions to safety last season and repeated the feat with Qingdao this year. Two consecutive survival missions with different clubs have firmly established his reputation as a “relegation specialist.”
Analysts note that beyond experience, Li’s greatest strengths lie in his strong domestic network and ability to manage dressing-room dynamics—qualities especially valuable for northern clubs fighting to stay afloat.
Although Li has indicated he will rest for now, his popularity and the league’s ongoing demand suggest he is unlikely to remain idle for long. Talks with interested clubs are expected to begin soon, and his next destination could be confirmed in the near future. One thing is clear: Li Xiaopeng’s journey in Chinese football is far from over.
