Fast Technology reported on January 10 that industry analysts expect Apple to roll out four distinct MacBook models in 2026—spanning an affordable entry-level option through to premium, professional-grade machines—further rounding out the MacBook lineup.
Leading the launch is reportedly a new budget MacBook, marking Apple’s first real push into a more value-focused notebook segment. It’s positioned for students, early-career professionals, and light productivity users, with an estimated China pricing target below RMB 4,999. With applicable subsidies, the effective purchase price could be even lower.
On the high end, a MacBook Pro M6 model with an OLED touchscreen is rumored as a potential “50th anniversary” highlight, described as one of the most significant upgrades in the product line’s history.
Below is the reported breakdown of the four models and their expected positioning.
Budget MacBook (Entry-Level Model)
This model is said to feature a 12.9-inch LCD display with a 2560×1664 resolution, P3 wide color, and 500 nits of brightness. It reportedly will not include ProMotion high refresh rate.
Performance is rumored to come from the A18 Pro chip—the same family used in the iPhone 16 Pro—built on TSMC’s 3nm process. Leaks suggest strong single-core gains versus the original M1, with modest multi-core improvement. It’s expected to handle everyday workloads smoothly, including document work, web browsing, light photo editing, and basic 1080p video editing. However, it reportedly will not support Thunderbolt and may include only one standard USB-C port.
Portability is a key theme here. The device is said to be around 11.3mm thick and approximately 1.24kg, with fanless passive cooling for quiet operation. Battery life is rumored to land in the 15–18 hour range, with low standby power draw. Color options may include silver, blue, pink, and yellow.
Pricing expectations sit around US$599–899 (roughly RMB 4,185–6,350), with some versions potentially dropping below RMB 4,000 in China after subsidies. Base configuration is rumored to start at 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, with memory not upgradeable.
MacBook Air (M5 Refresh)
The MacBook Air is expected to continue in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes with the current wedge-style design, without major external changes. Some leaks suggest Apple may drop the current “sky blue” shade and replace it with a deeper blue option. Display specs are expected to remain consistent with the current Liquid Retina panel.
Internally, it’s rumored to move to the M5 chip (TSMC 3nm). Early benchmark chatter—referencing M5 iPad Pro results—suggests a modest CPU uplift versus M4 (roughly 12–15%), with a larger GPU improvement claim (around 36%), alongside further efficiency gains and slightly longer battery life.
Pricing is expected to stay at the familiar US$999 starting point (around RMB 7,000), with a likely release window in Q1 2026—widely framed as a typical “new chip, same design” update.
MacBook Pro (M5 Pro / M5 Max)
For the professional line, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are rumored to retain the Liquid Retina XDR Mini-LED displays and largely unchanged industrial design. Ports, speakers, microphones, and overall hardware layout are expected to remain similar to the current generation.
The key upgrade would be the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, reportedly built on TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process. Leaks claim improved memory bandwidth and faster SSD performance compared with the base M5, aimed at heavy workflows. GPU core count is also rumored to increase, with some reports suggesting graphics performance could rise by around 50% versus M4 Pro/Max in certain scenarios.
Estimated US pricing starts at US$1,999 for the 14-inch M5 Pro (about RMB 14,000) and US$2,399 for the 16-inch M5 Pro (about RMB 17,000). M5 Max versions are rumored to start around US$3,199 (14-inch) and US$3,499 (16-inch). These models are also expected around Q1 2026.
MacBook Pro (M6 OLED Touchscreen Edition)
This is described as the biggest rumored change of the entire roadmap: Apple’s first MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen, replacing the current Mini-LED approach. OLED is expected to deliver higher contrast, improved efficiency, and better power consumption—while introducing touch input for the first time on a MacBook Pro.
The camera area is rumored to shift to a hole-punch style cutout, with a UI concept reminiscent of iPhone’s Dynamic Island, moving away from the current notch.
Powering it would be the M6 chip, which leaks suggest could be built on a 2nm process and paired with new packaging methods integrating CPU, GPU, memory (DRAM), and the Neural Engine more tightly—aiming for a noticeable step forward in both performance and efficiency. The chassis is also rumored to become thinner and lighter while maintaining strong battery life.
Because OLED panels and next-node chips can be expensive, the starting price is expected to rise by several hundred dollars versus today’s MacBook Pro—potentially exceeding US$2,200 for the 14-inch model. Timing is rumored for late 2026 or early 2027, and it may be positioned as a flagship “anniversary-era” product.
