One of the most talked-about moments from this year’s TVB Awards ceremony happened when host Bob Lam (Lam Shing-bun) won “Best Male Host” and accidentally broke his trophy’s base on stage.
During his acceptance speech—reflecting on two decades of ups and downs—he got carried away and struck the trophy against the podium, causing the base to snap. The sudden mishap briefly created an awkward pause, until presenter Wong Cho-lam quickly rescued the moment with a Cantonese wordplay blessing, reframing the “break” as a lucky sign. Bob then joked, “I used to have one trophy—now I have two!” turning the incident into laughter.
Afterward, Bob said it was simply the result of being overly excited on stage. TVB also issued a clarification, explaining that the trophies used on-site are often props for filming and presentation, and that winners would later receive the official gold trophy engraved with their names.
As the clip spread, some commentators speculated the act could have been deliberate for attention. In a recent interview with Hong Kong media, Bob denied that claim, saying he wasn’t trying to “design” a headline moment. He explained that such formal occasions can be nerve-racking—especially with many senior figures in the audience—and that he momentarily lost control of his strength. He admitted it was “a bit too forceful,” but insisted there was no intention to create a spectacle.
He also mentioned that he still hasn’t received the completed trophy base, as the engraving and production are still in progress. Overall, the episode appears to be a minor ceremony mishap rather than a serious issue.
When asked about family topics, Bob said it’s normal for an older teen to develop a personal style. As a parent, he mainly reminds his child that what’s posted online can be saved, resurfaced, and discussed later—so it’s important to be thoughtful. He added that his daughter is currently single, has people showing interest, and may consider applying to a performing arts academy in the future.
