(Melbourne, March 31) China’s national team suffered a disappointing 0–2 defeat against Cameroon in an international friendly at AAMI Park, conceding twice within the opening nine minutes. From defensive intensity to team coordination, China was outplayed throughout—despite Cameroon not qualifying for the World Cup.
Coming off a 2–0 win over Curaçao, head coach Shao Jiayi earned his first victory with the team. However, in this match, China adopted a more defensive 5-4-1 setup, with Zhang Yuning leading the line and Wei Shihao and Wang Yudong operating on the wings. Cameroon, meanwhile, was led by forward Aiyong of Levante UD.
Cameroon struck early in the 3rd minute, as Alioum’s through ball found Aiyong, who calmly finished to make it 1–0. Just six minutes later, Cameroon doubled the lead from a well-executed set piece, with Alioum scoring from the far post after a flick-on in the box.
Two goals conceded in six minutes effectively decided the match. China struggled to cope with Cameroon’s pace and physicality, exposing a clear gap in competitiveness. Years of limited exposure to high-level opponents from Europe, Africa, and South America appeared to take a toll.
As the game progressed, frustration was evident among the Chinese players. Goalkeeper Yan Junling and coach Shao Jiayi both showed visible disappointment on the sidelines. Commentator Su Dong noted that the lack of regular competition against stronger teams has hindered development, and this defeat served as a stark reminder of the gap that remains.
