Five years after boldly declaring its ambition to challenge Apple, Xiaomi has delivered with the Xiaomi 17 series, unveiled on September 25, 2025 during Lei Jun’s annual keynote. The lineup includes Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max.
Interestingly, Xiaomi skipped “16” altogether. Instead, to directly mirror Apple’s iPhone 17, Xiaomi jumped straight to 17 and introduced a Pro Max model, ensuring its product map perfectly aligns with Apple’s.
Lei Jun confidently stated after the launch:
“It’s time for the world to see Xiaomi differently. With the Xiaomi 17, we’ve achieved a generational leap — in many ways, we even surpass the iPhone 17.”
Yet, reactions online were polarized. In one poll, 75% of users still favored the iPhone 17 over Xiaomi’s new flagship. Many argue that by adopting Apple’s naming convention, Xiaomi has invited direct — and unforgiving — comparisons.
📸 The Back Display Debate
The Xiaomi 17 Pro series introduces a “Xiaomi Miaoxiang” back display supporting ultra-clear selfies, dynamic notifications, and quick notes. Borrowed from Xiaomi’s MIX Flip foldables, the feature is innovative but divisive. Tech reviewers largely dismissed it as a “gimmick,” predicting it may be abandoned in the next generation.
📷 Cameras Held Back
Unlike Xiaomi’s Ultra line, the 17 series adopts a more conservative imaging setup. For instance, the 17 Pro Max uses a 50MP telephoto sensor, which pales compared to rivals like the OPPO Find X9 Pro with a 200MP sensor.
⚔️ Tian Ji’s Horse Racing Strategy
Xiaomi priced the 17 Pro Max at ¥5999 — exactly the same as the base iPhone 17. This clever “cross-match” approach creates the perception that Xiaomi’s Pro Max offers greater value against Apple’s entry-level flagship.
📊 Data supports this strategy: iPhone-to-Xiaomi switchers doubled from 3.2% in 2019 to 6.1% in 2025.
But Apple’s surprise this year was massive: the iPhone 17 standard model leapt forward with an LTPO 120Hz display, 3000-nit brightness, and ultra-strong ceramic shield glass. Sales skyrocketed, with the base iPhone 17 selling 185% more than its predecessor.
⚖️ Bottom Line
Xiaomi 17 shines on paper with aggressive specs and pricing. But most consumers still prize stability, global ecosystem, and longevity of iPhones over raw numbers.
As Lei Jun admitted:
“Competing with Apple will be a long and painful process. But step by step, if we keep learning and refining, one day iPhone will be overtaken.”
