On October 13, Apple CEO Tim Cook kicked off his second trip to China this year, starting with an appearance at THE MONSTERS 10th Anniversary Exhibition in Shanghai. Accompanied by top Apple executives — including new COO Sabih Khan, who made his first public appearance in China — Cook’s visit signals Apple’s growing strategic focus on the Chinese market.

That evening, Cook joined a live broadcast in the Apple App Store, officially announcing that iPhone Air pre-orders will open on October 17 at 9 a.m., with full sales beginning on October 22. The device will be sold as an unlocked version, allowing users to choose any carrier freely.

However, this trip wasn’t just about promoting a new product. Industry analysts describe it as a strategic mission, aimed at deepening Apple’s technological and ecosystem footprint in China.

eSIM Launch Paves the Way for iPhone Air

Coinciding with Cook’s arrival, both China Mobile and China Unicom announced regulatory approval to commercialize eSIM (embedded SIM) technology — a move that could not have come at a better time for Apple.

Unlike traditional SIM cards, eSIM is built directly into the device, saving space and allowing seamless carrier switching. Previously, iPhone Air’s launch in China faced delays due to limited eSIM adoption. Now, with full-scale pilot approval, Apple’s path to introducing the ultra-thin iPhone Air has become clear.

iPhone Air: The Beginning of Apple’s Next Design Evolution

At just 5.6mm thick, iPhone Air is the thinnest iPhone ever made — a true engineering statement. It’s not only a product but also the starting point for Apple’s next design revolution, potentially paving the way for a foldable iPhone in 2026.

Despite a smaller battery, the iPhone Air’s performance remains uncompromised, thanks to its A19 Pro chip, N1 coprocessor, and C1X modem, offering 30% better power efficiency.

From eSIM to AI: Apple’s Dual Strategic Message

Beyond hardware, Cook’s trip also highlights Apple’s push to bring Apple Intelligence (AI) to China. Since its global debut in 2024, the rollout has been delayed in China due to policy and data regulations. Apple now plans to launch Apple Intelligence by late 2025, reinforcing its competitive edge in smart devices.

As artificial intelligence becomes the new battleground for smartphones, Apple’s success in aligning iPhone Air and AI integration could redefine its position in China and beyond.

Final Thoughts

Tim Cook’s visit to China may appear to be a product promotion, but in reality, it’s a strategic move to shape Apple’s future.
With eSIM unlocking flexibility and AI redefining intelligence, the iPhone Air represents much more than a new device —
it marks the dawn of a new era for Apple in China.
