Manchester United face a rare midweek fixture on Tuesday night as they host bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford. The visitors arrive at a disadvantage, with midfield regular André suspended, further strengthening United’s chances of securing another victory.
André picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in Wolves’ 2–1 defeat to Liverpool over the weekend, triggering an automatic one-match ban under Premier League rules. The absence compounds Wolves’ struggles, as Gary O’Neil’s side sit last in the table with just two points and remain winless this season.
Despite United’s inconsistent form, a home clash against an under-strength and low-confidence Wolves side is widely viewed as a favorable opportunity. The Red Devils recently thrashed Wolves 4–1 away from home, marking Amorim’s biggest Premier League win since taking charge.
Following a narrow 1–0 victory over Newcastle United, United have entered a promising run of fixtures. After Wolves, they open 2026 with an away match against newly promoted Leeds United, who sit 16th, before traveling to face Burnley, currently second from bottom.
In other words, United’s next three league opponents all rank among the bottom five, presenting Amorim with his best chance yet to record a first four-match league winning streak. Including the FA Cup third-round tie against Brighton, United could even build a five-game winning run across all competitions before the Manchester derby in mid-January.
Young center-back Eden Haven has echoed the growing optimism, insisting United should aim higher than just a top-four finish. “If you look at Manchester United’s history, we’ve won the Champions League three times. That’s where we belong,” he said, adding that longer recovery periods between matches could be key to climbing the table.
Haven, a product of Arsenal’s academy, also expressed his determination to return United to European competition next season, even suggesting a title challenge is not out of the question.
According to the BBC, Haven remains committed to representing England at senior level, despite being eligible for Ghana and attracting interest from the Ghana FA. He previously featured for England’s U20s and has impressed in recent United appearances, earning Man of the Match honors against Newcastle.
With Wolves posing limited threat, Amorim may revert to his favored 3-4-3 system, particularly if Mason Mount is unable to start. A back three could once again take shape at Old Trafford.
