Windows 11 January Patch KB5074109 Causes Black Screens and GPU Issues — Users Urged to Hold Off

Microsoft recently rolled out the first cumulative security patch of 2026 for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, KB5074109, intended to fix vulnerabilities. Instead, it has caused widespread system problems, including black screens, system freezes, failed uninstall attempts, and GPU performance drops.

Key issues reported:

1. Black Screen / Boot Failure: Some users encounter the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error or cannot boot, often triggered by prior forced removal of Edge, Defender, or other system apps.
2. Shutdown Failure: The patch blocked the virtualization cleanup process, preventing proper shutdown or sleep, affecting both desktops and laptops.
3. GPU and Performance Drops: The patch interfered with Windows–GPU driver communication, causing frame drops of 15%-20% in high-load programs; systems with NPU could see GPU performance drop by 90%.

Even additional Microsoft patches addressing Outlook startup issues did not fully fix the underlying GPU conflict, which was later mitigated by NVIDIA driver updates. Users unable to uninstall the patch may need WinRE mode or a system reinstall to recover.

As a result, some Windows users are exploring Linux alternatives. Gaming and office tasks are increasingly supported, though Adobe and certain industrial design software remain Windows-dependent.

Recommendation: Pause updates until stable fixes are released by Microsoft or hardware vendors.
