Malaysia’s Department of Statistics reported that the Services Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 1% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of last year, marking the third consecutive quarter of the same pace of increase.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir said the accommodation, food and beverage services index climbed 3.1%, mainly driven by restaurants and mobile food service activities (+3.5%) as well as beverage service activities (+3.0%).

The transport index increased 2.2%, supported largely by a 7.1% jump in passenger air transport. Meanwhile, the education index rose 1.5%, led by secondary education (+2.3%) and higher education (+1.6%).

Other sectors that posted increases included health (+0.7%), real estate activities (+0.6%) and professional services (+0.5%). However, the arts, entertainment and recreation index declined 3.8%, while information and communication recorded a slight dip of 0.1%.

Quarter-on-quarter, the Services PPI rose 0.3%, higher than the 0.1% recorded in 3Q, mainly supported by transport (+1.2%) and accommodation, food and beverage services (+0.8%). Real estate activities, education and health each increased 0.2%, while professional services edged up 0.1%. In contrast, arts, entertainment and recreation fell 3.3%, and information and communication was unchanged.

For the full year, the Services PPI recorded a modest increase of 0.9%, exceeding the 0.7% rise in 2024. The gain was mainly driven by accommodation, food and beverage services (+3.4%), followed by arts, entertainment and recreation (+1.8%) and education (+1.3%). Health (+0.7%), professional services (+0.6%) and real estate activities (+0.2%) also recorded growth. In comparison, transport declined 0.4%, while information and communication slipped 0.1%.
