According to InsideEVs, the U.S. produced about 1.04 million electric vehicles last year, ranking third globally. China ranked first, with around 16.10 million new-energy vehicles produced (including BEVs, PHEVs, range-extended EVs, and fuel-cell vehicles).
Germany ranked second and set a new record. Data from Germany’s auto industry association shows the country built about 1.22 million EVs, up 15% year over year. Europe recorded nearly 2.6 million EV registrations, up almost 30%. Germany produced 4.15 million new cars in total (+2%), with EVs making up nearly 30% (about 40% if plug-in hybrids are included).
On sales, the U.S. sold roughly 1.3 million EVs last year—about half of Europe’s total. In Europe, Volkswagen led in 2025 with nearly 275,000 EV sales (+56%), while Tesla fell 27% to 238,800.
