A historic breakthrough! At the national throws competition, Zhao Jie delivered a sensational performance, breaking the women’s hammer throw Asian record that had stood for 12 years, marking a remarkable milestone as the eighth athlete in history to achieve this feat.

On April 3, at the National Throws Series (Stage 2) in Chengdu, Zhao Jie delivered a historic performance in the women’s hammer throw, winning gold with 78.22 meters and breaking a 12-year-old Asian record.

This marks the first time an Asian athlete has surpassed the 78-meter mark in this event.

Peak form

Zhao had already shown strong form, throwing 77.61 meters in Stage 1—just 7 cm shy of the Asian record.

In Stage 2:

• First throw: 77.31m
• Second throw: 78.22m (new Asian record)

Historic milestone

The previous record (77.68m) was set by Wang Zheng in 2014—also in Chengdu.

World ranking

Zhao now ranks 8th all-time in women’s hammer throw history.
