Hun Sen later confirmed the call on his social media, admitting he shared the recording with other Cambodian officials and suggested the leak may have come from within.
Coalition in Disarray, Formal Petitions Demand Resignation
According to Bangkok Post, Paetongtarn’s leadership legitimacy is under serious threat. On June 18, the Bhumjaithai Party—the second-largest in the ruling alliance—announced its departure from the coalition, depriving the PM of crucial parliamentary support. At least three formal petitions have been submitted questioning her qualifications and demanding her resignation.
Critics accused Paetongtarn of “secret diplomacy” on sensitive border matters, branding her actions as undermining national sovereignty.
PM Responds: A Negotiation Tactic, Yet Apologizes Publicly
In a press conference on June 19, Paetongtarn acknowledged the fallout and issued a formal apology to the Thai people. She described the call with Hun Sen as a “diplomatic strategy” aimed at de-escalating military tensions along the border.
The controversy follows a brief skirmish between Thai and Cambodian forces on May 28, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier and ongoing military standoff.
