(Beijing, March 31) The European World Cup playoff final is approaching, with the Italy national football team aiming to return to the World Cup stage after a 12-year absence. However, ahead of their decisive clash with the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team, an alleged “spy incident” has sparked controversy.
According to reports, an Italian soldier was spotted lingering near Bosnia’s training session. After the public viewing period ended, he reportedly remained in the area and used concealed equipment to film training activities, including star striker Edin Džeko.
The incident quickly triggered accusations of espionage, adding tension ahead of the crucial match. In response, Italy’s Ministry of Defense denied any wrongdoing, stating that the individual was indeed a soldier stationed nearby and was merely observing training out of convenience, with no ulterior motive.
Despite the clarification, the controversy has intensified the already high-stakes atmosphere. Italy, a traditional powerhouse, has missed the last two World Cups (2018 and 2022) and once again finds itself in the playoff route.
