(Quanzhou, Fujian) Taiwanese singer Rainie Yang has once again sparked online discussion after comments made during her recent concert. She performed You Ah You Ah by Waa Wei, a Hokkien song, as a gesture to local fans—but her explanation before singing drew mixed reactions.
Yang admitted the song was challenging due to its Hokkien lyrics, stating that she is more familiar with Cantonese because of her background. However, her description of herself as “Cantonese-based” quickly went viral and confused many netizens.
The clip spread widely on Threads, with users questioning her statement and debating her linguistic identity.
This is not the first time Yang has faced backlash over her remarks. Past controversies have also shaped public perception of her.
Previously, in an interview with TVB Entertainment News Channel, she explained that Cantonese is part of her life due to her parents’ background, though she admitted she is not fully fluent and mainly practices through music.
